Calaveras Animal Services to transfer control

Calaveras Animal Services to transfer control back to Environmental Agency

Calaveras County Animal Services will soon transfer control from the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Department back to the Environmental Management Agency, after seven years starting October 1st. County Supervisors voted unanimously to approve the transition after a two-hour study session last week and will seek a long-term public-private partnership with the nonprofit Calaveras Humane Society to manage animal services. Sheriff’s Department Administrators told the Supervisors in January the Department would seek a transition based on reduced funding and the opening of the new jail next year. The Sheriff’s Department took on Animal Services in 2005 after a Grand Jury report slammed the condition of the County Animal Shelter and its management. County staff from various departments each have recommended funding and staffing of Animal Services be increased regardless of what department administers it. Calaveras Humane Society volunteers are very supportive of the transition and are working hard to make the long-term solution viable.
