Local State of Emergency Declared In Calaveras

A local state of emergency has been declared in Calaveras County due to hazardous trees. The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday voted to declare a local state of emergency because they fear trees burned by the Butte Fire are in danger of falling in upcoming winter weather. Public Works officials say the trees that were killed or seriously injured by the fire continually become more weak as time goes on, raising the level of danger of them falling. An emergency declaration will allow the county to immediately remove critical trees and go after money to do so. This will help with many trees, but probably not all of them. More than 8,000 dead or dying trees are in areas that have been indentified by Federal officials as either red-legged frog habitat or culturally sensitive areas. Those can’t be removed until Federal officials identify mitigation measures and the county implements them.
