Calaveras Farm To School Network Receives Grant

A huge amount of grant money will go toward garden programs at the Calaveras Unified School District. According to reports, the Calaveras Farm to School Network has received two awards and a $272,487 grant in recognition of the district’s expanding gardens. The 2016 Specialty Crop Block Grant will help Program Organizer Kevin Hesser get the program working as one fluid motion between the multiple farm sites in the district. The grant funds from the California Department of Food and Agriculture will be used to set up a Garden Enhanced Nutrition Education partnership endeavor between the schools, farms and the UC Cooperative Extension. The goal is the educate students and parents about specialty crops, from planting to cooking. Local schools also received passes to a statewide conference for some of the student gardeners, among other things.
