Fatal Crash Shuts Down Major Highway In Calaveras

A Stockton resident died in a Calaveras County vehicle crash over the weekend that shut down a major highway for hours. The crash happened on Highway 12 west of Central Hill Rd at around 2:15 Saturday afternoon. According to the CHP, 23 year old Robert Kimmel of Lockeford was driving a garbage truck eastbound on Highway 12 when, for unknown reasons, he lost control of the truck. The truck slid sideways and crossed into oncoming traffic. The rear end of the truck slammed into the driver’s side of a van driven by 61 year old Reay Peart of Stockton, killing Peart. Kimmel was taken to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto with moderate injuries and Peart’s passenger, 60 year old Susan Peart, suffered minor injuries. Highway 12 was closed for about 3 ½ hours.
