Mixed News For The CUSD's Budget

Mixed news for the Calaveras Unified School District’s budget. The school board heard last week that their 2016-2017 budget now meets standards for positive certification, meaning they can pay all of their bills for the current fiscal years plus the following two. That’s a change from the previous fiscal year, when the district was one of 14 districts in the state to file a qualified second interim report, which meant they wouldn’t be able to pay their bills in the two years following the budget year. The bad news is that in order to maintain the positive status the district is going to need to make cuts to their spending plan over the next two school years. A total of four teachers would need to be laid off and the ROP cosmetology program would need to be shut down. District officials and consultants warned the board against continued deficit spending, as well.
