Conditions Of Local Dams
With the treacherous situation involving the Oroville dam spillway erosion and the evacuations of hundreds of thousands of people downstream, we were curious about two huge lakes here in the Gold Country – Lakes Pardee and Camanche. We talked to East Bay Municipal Utility District’s Janess Miller, who said they are confident with their facilities. Miller says they conduct regular thorough checkups on the integrity of their dams, including Camanche, which is an earthen dam that helps control downstream impacts from both lakes. East Bay MUD engineers do their own surveys plus there are annual surveys with federal inspectors. All of those tests and inspections are showing the dams are in good shape. They also conduct emergency drills to prepare for any unusual situations and make upgrades and improvements as necessary, both to their procedures and to the dams themselves.
