Recent Crashes Result In Moderate To Major Injuries

Two recent crashes in Calaveras County resulted in helicopter rides for two people. Saturday night on Highway 49 near the Calaveras/Tuolumne County line, 18 year old Jamaal Prince, Jr, of Riverbank allowed his vehicle to drift off of the roadway, over a curb and into a stone wall. Prince was taken to Sonora Regional hospital with minor injuries, his passenger, a 17 year old male, was flown to Memorial North Hospital in Modesto with moderate injuries. Then, at around 10 oclock Monday night, 58 year old Bernice Winge of Valley Springs was driving westbound on St Petersberg Rd near North Shore Court when she decided to make a U-Turn. Because the reverse gear in her car doesn’t work, her passenger, 65 year old Lee Phelps, got out to push it backwards. For unknown reasons, the transmission popped into drive and ran Phelps over, then collided into a tree. He suffered major injuries and was flown the Memorial North Hospital in Modesto.
