Cow Vs. Car Near Ione

A cow vs. vehicle accident was reported about 9:30 last night just west of Ione.   According to reports, a CHP officer on routine patrol was traveling westbound on Highway 104 just west of Irish Hill road, when he noticed what appeared to be a vehicle’s tail lights in a pond.  Upon closer inspection, he realized it was in fact a vehicle in the water. Unable to communicate with the driver and believing he may be severely injured, the officer entered the water. Once he reached the vehicle he was able to make contact with the driver, 26 year old Kenneth Salmond of Sacramento.  Salmond told the office he was on his way to work when he struck a cow, ran off the road through a fence, coming to rest in the pond.  Salmond was transported to Kaiser South for treatment of minor injuries.
