Man Steals Car Twice, Car Stolen From Man

A Copperopolis man is in jail on charges that he stole the same car twice, but he says he borrowed it and was beaten up in Stockton by some other car thieves. According to the Angels Camp Police Department, an Angels Camp resident claims 26-year-old Joseph LeCompte stole a vehicle from him on April 15, but returned it on April 22. The victim says he was afraid LeCompte would hurt him if he reported it, so he didn’t. Then, the victim says LeCompte stole the vehicle again at 1:00 am on April 24, threatening violence if the victim didn’t let him have the vehicle. Two days later, the victim heard from a mutual friend that his vehicle was stolen in Stockton. The victim identified LeCompte in a photo line-up. Officers found LeCompte, who said he borrowed the vehicle and was beaten up in Stockton by some people who then took the vehicle. San Joaquin County Sheriff’s deputies found the vehicle a short time later and contacted the victim. LeCompte was booked into the Calaveras County Jail on several felony charges.
