The California Highway Patrol will be ramping up enforcement over the 4th of July holiday.   A “maximum enforcement period” will start at 6:01 tonight and ending 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4.  During the 2016 Independence Day MEP, 35 people were killed on California roadways.  The main focus of the MEP will be on speed enforcement, seatbelt violations, distracted driving and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.  Of those who died in the CHP’s jurisdiction in 2016, 65 percent were not wearing seat belts.  Regular seat belt use is the single most effective way to reduce fatalities in motor vehicle collisions.   Travel at a safe speed, fasten your seat belt, and designate a sober driver if your holiday plans include alcohol.
