Phase 1 Of Hazard Tree Removal Is Complete

Phase I of the Butte Fire Hazard Burnt Tree Removal Program is now complete. Sharon Torrence, Calaveras County Public Information officer reports, a total of 8451 trees, 82,882 cubic yards of logs and slash and 39,477 cubic yards of burned tree debris were, hauled, chipped and transported to a Biomass Plant, (Waste- to-Energy) in Sonora. Many crew members hired by both Phillips and Jordan and Tetra Tech, the companies hired by the county to do the work, were local. Torrence says those who came from out of the area contributed to the local economy by staying at local hotels, eating at local restaurants, shopping at local grocery stores and filling their gas tanks at local filling stations. According to Torrence, the Butte Fire Hazard Burnt Tree Removal Program was successful in eliminating the hazard from County roadways making it safer for the traveling public and that the goals set by the County, and all requirements of Cal OES and FEMA were met.
