Ione To Add Additional Officer To City's Police Department

The Ione City Council has approved adding an additional officer to the city’s police department. The position is funded from money negotiated from the state of California intended to mitigate the impacts of Mule Creek State Prison and its recent expansion. The city will receive $100,000, half of which will pay for the officer this fiscal year and half placed in reserves for the next year. Any additional funds to keep the position filled will have to be secured through further negotiation with the state. The council also voted to join the county-wide tourism promotion district, which will charge an additional 2% on hotel room stays with the funds going to the Amador Council of Tourism to promote more visits and tourism in the county. Additional items, including a budget report, ordinance on building secondary dwelling units and the city’s contract with its wastewater engineer, were all continued to its next meeting. The city will also hold a special meeting next Wednesday, October 11th to discuss the contentious issue of marijuana-related uses and business in the city.
