CUEA Will Strike Tomorrow, October 19th!

The Calaveras Unified Educators Association will strike tomorrow, October 19th. CUEA President Lorraine Angle made the announcement last night before the Calaveras Unified School Board, following a last ditch effort at negotiating a settlement with district officials earlier in the afternoon. District Superintendent Mark Campbell says, while both sides are close to agreement on most items and issues are being negotiated, the most significant gap is with teacher compensation. The district has offered a 2% salary increase and  the teachers union have proposed a 6.5% increase and $100 increase to monthly benefit cap. In a prepared statement, Campbell states, the district will continue to hope for the best, remain open for direct dialogue and work towards a common resolution, while also preparing as best they can for a worst case scenario. Campbell says that during the strike, CUSD will have all school sites operational and will do all they can to provide for a safe, secure and productive learning environment, strongly encourage all students to attend school as they normally would.  On a side note: after a closed session meeting Tuesday night, the Calaveras School Board decided that sports will not be canceled or postponed by the possibility of a teachers strike. Heading into the meeting, it was announced that sports would be canceled with a strike, but that now is not the case.
