Winter Storm Warning For Sierra Nevada

National Weather Service Issues Winter Storm Warning For Sierra Nevada

The National Weather Service has upgraded their earlier winter storm watch to a winter storm warning for the Sierra Nevada above 6,000 feet from 10AM this morning through 4AM Friday. Heavy wet snow and strong wind is expected with zero visibility at times. Snow levels will be above 8,000 feet through Thursday morning, lowering to 7,500 feet during Thursday afternoon and near 6,000 feet Thursday night. Total wet snow accumulations of 8-15 inches is expected, with 2 to 4 feet possible at higher elevations. This will be a warm storm so expect some runoff in small creeks and streams and the possibility of localized flooding in low-lying areas, in the Mother Lode. Rainfall amounts will total from one-half to 3 inches across the foothills. Motorists planning travel into the Sierra Nevada during this time frame should be prepared for hazardous winter driving conditions. Travel will be extremely difficult with significant delays and possible chain control. Damage to trees and power lines may also occur.
