Merita Callaway To Challenge Incumbent Oliveira In Calaveras County

Merita Callaway will challenge incumbent Michael Oliveira for the District 3 seat in the New Year, setting up a possible rematch from the 2014 election.   In a statement released on Friday, Callaway says, “Running for office is not a decision taken lightly” and that over the past few months, she has spoken with former supporters, community leaders and friends from diverse political viewpoints, who all urged her to run.  Callaway filed a petition in lieu of filing fee form Friday morning.   With her announcement, Callaway joins Ed Langan in challenging Oliveira for the District 3 seat, which covers the Highway 4 corridor from Murphys to the Alpine County border.  A 30-year resident of District 3, Callaway, said in her announcement that land use is a key issue, and if the General Plan is not completed in 2018, it should be the “highest land use priority” because it is the “economic engine in Calaveras.”   In addition to her tenure as a Supervisor, Callaway has been a member of the Calaveras Community Foundation, the Ebbetts Pass National Scenic Byway Board and the Advisory Committee for the Calaveras Big Trees Association among other organizations.  Before her defeat by about 50 votes in 2014, Callaway served as a supervisor for 22 years.
