Mule Creek State Prison Investigates Death Of An Inmate 

Mule Creek State Prison officials are investigating the death of an inmate. During a routine security check on Monday morning inmate Robert Hunter was found unresponsive in his cell with blunt force injuries to his face, he was examined by the Prison medical staff and pronounced dead.  Hunter, 77, was from Riverside County, serving a 15-years-to-life sentence with the possibility of parole under California’s “Three Strikes” law on regarding sex acts with a minor.  Hunter’s cellmate, Matthew Wanser, was taken into custody as a suspect.  Wanser is from San Diego County and is serving time on two counts of first-degree murder. The incident is currently being investigated as a homicide by the prison’s Investigative Services Unit. MCSP located just west of Ione, houses more than 4,100 minimum-, medium- and maximum-security inmates.
