FBI Investigates Email Threats Towards Calaveras County Schools

FBI officials are actively working with local law enforcement regarding the threats made yesterday against numerous schools in 46 states, including Calaveras County.  The emailed threats have now been linked to an internet hacking group called Apophis Squad.  According to a statement issued by CUSD Superintendent Mark Campbell, multiple school districts throughout the state received similar generalized threats that made no mention of specific schools or districts.  Campbell said the group has been targeting schools in the United Kingdom over the past few weeks and announced Monday that they were starting to target schools in the U.S.  Campbell stressed, there is no reason to believe that anyone's safety is threatened at any of the District’s school sites.  According to the FBI San Francisco Field Office, it is believed at this time that the threats were part of a large influx and do not appear to be legitimate. The group Apophis Squad is based out of Switzerland and has claimed responsibility for the nationwide hoax, as well as a series of bomb threat emails that were sent to schools across the U.K. in late March.
