AAA Projects Record Breaking Travel Numbers This Holiday Season

AAA projects a record breaking 112.5 million Americans will travel this holiday season, meeting more than one-third of all Americans will take to the Nations roads and skies to celebrate the year-end holidays. That includes more than 14 million California travelers, up nearly 5 percent from 2017, and shattering the state’s previous record forecast.  The vast majority of Californians--more than 12 million—will hit the road between Saturday, Dec. 22nd and Tuesday, Jan. 1, an increase of 4.7 percent over the last year’s auto traffic. Although gas prices in the golden state have fallen nearly 30 cents in recent weeks, motorists can still expect to pay the highest holiday gas prices since 2013. The statewide average was $3.42 on December 13, 32 cents higher than a year ago. More than 1.5 million Californians will take flight, up about 5.5 percent from last year. Expect the Nation’s airports to be extremely busy—this is AAA’s highest projected air travel since 2003. This holiday season, Saturday, Dec. 22 will be the busiest days in the skies and at the airports. In most cases, the lightest days to travel will be on Christmas Day or Christmas Eve.
