Reinforcement Of The Argonaut Mine Tailing Dam Is Now Complete

The Jackson City Council received a report on the now-completed construction project to reinforce the Argonaut Mine tailing dam. First constructed in 1916 to hold the processed remains of gold ore, the Argonaut Dam posed a danger to much of Jackson should it fail. The State Department of  Toxic Substance Control, on behalf of the Federal Environmental Protection Agency has undertaken the reinforcement of the dam. Construction began in May of 2018 and was completed in December. The series of arches of the original dam were each filled with fresh concrete and an earthen berm was also added as further support. Also installed was a spillway to relieve water pressure on the dam during storm events. The site is now closed down for the winter. Some repairs to nearby roads will be completed in spring, and the Environmental Protection Agency will continue cleanup measures on the site. The council also announced last night the appointment of Chris Mynderup as interim Police Chief for the city. Mynderup, an 18-year veteran of the department, praised the force he is heading up, calling Jackson the “Best police force in the county.”
