Today We Celebrate Civil Rights Leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Today we celebrate Civil Rights Leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Since 1986, the third Monday in January has been a Federal Holiday to honor Dr. King. All non-essential federal buildings and services are closed. Of course with the Government shutdown, this takes on a somewhat different tone this year! If you’re wondering what’s open and closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day; federal, state county and municipal offices are closed. Public schools, colleges and universities are also closed. For the most part, with few exceptions, stores and restaurants are open with normal store hours on MLK Day. Dr. King was an American Baptist Minister and Activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the Civil Rights Movement from 1954 until his death in 1968.
