Calaveras Supes Vote To Refund Cannabis Farmers

The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to refund cannabis farmers. Nearly $900,000 in leftover funds from the cannabis regulatory program will be dispersed among growers that paid registration renewal fees or application fees prior to the boards ban on commercial cultivation. Speaking to the board yesterday, Calaveras auditor-controller Rebecca Callen said farmers that paid renewal fees will be reimbursed in full ($5,000), and the rest fo the funds will be allocated evenly among first-time applicants during the second year of the urgency ordinance. The issue was brought up in an October 2018 meeting, but failed to receive the required four-fifths vote. This time, the board voted 4 to 1 to issue refunds, with the no vote from District 4 Supervisor Dennis Mills. County officials have said in the past, there are 26 possible claims for those that paid renewal registration fees, and $130,000 is budgeted for reimbursements. Additionally, there are opportunities for 736 claims for first-time applicants (permits that were initiated but were never processed in 2018). Refunds for those claims are budgeted at $768,741 in total.
