Series of Winter Storms Expected to Hit This Weekend

The National Weather Service is warning of hazardous mountain travel this Weekend and into Monday.  A series of winter storms are expected, with the heaviest snow expected late this evening into Saturday morning over the higher elevations of the Sierra.  Gusty winds will combine with the snow to bring white-out conditions at times. Weekend travel through the Sierras is encouraged before this afternoon if possible. Snow levels will start around 6000 feet today then drop to 3500 to 4500 feet by Sunday. On Monday, snow levels will continue to fall to the 1000-2000 foot range, with accumulating snow being possible for foothills.  For elevations above 2,500 feet, the total snow accumulation by Monday night will likely range between two to fifteen inches. Three feet of snow accumulation is expected above 3,000 feet.  Six to ten feet of snow is possible above 5,000 feet.
