AFPD's New Proposal Gets Uneasy Reception From The Public

The Amador Fire Protection District’s proposal for “Bill for Services” got an uneasy reception before two-public information sessions for the proposal which will bill residents for medical service calls by the district. Yesterday, AFPD, which provides fire services for most of Unincorporated Amador County held a pair of public meetings on the proposal. As described by Fire Chief Walt White, the proposed new police is as follows: When the fire department is the primary responder to a medical emergency call, the fire department will bill those who received service. White and his staff emphasized that the department would use what is called “compassionate billing”, which means only your medical insurance company would receive a bill and that those without insurance would not have to pay the fee, which was estimated at $364 dollars per incident. White went on to say that the fee would not apply if the AFPD provided mutual aid, such as in the city of Jackson, Ione or Sutter Creek. Asked if the new policy would affect insurance rates, White replied that “Bill for Service” had been enacted by over a hundred and thirty different departments across the state without a change in insurance policies. The money collected by the new policy would go to enhancing department response to medical emergencies. It’s estimated that 80% of AFPD’s calls are form medical in nature, and in 70% of cases, the fire department beats the ambulance to the scene. The final decision to implement “Bill for Service” will go before the Amador Board of Supervisors, who also serve as the Board of Directors for the AFPD. Chief White said he hoped that it would be voted on at the next regular AFPD meeting on April 16th.
