California Gas Prices

California motorists are now paying the nation’s highest gasoline tax, at 47.3 cents a gallon.   California’s gasoline prices are now a full dollar higher than the national average.   Drivers will pay about $3 more per month and $37 more per year.   The new tax is expected to bring in $54 billion in revenue, which will be divided between state and local governments.  Officials say, the money will go toward public transit and the state’s decaying roads.  The latest tax is part of SB 1, a transportation improvement bill passed in 2017.   A Republican led effort to repeal the law was rejected by voters in November.
